Advanced CBT Diploma – Phase Two

Partner: Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM) – Turkey

In 2024, UOSSM Turkey launched Phase Two of its Comprehensive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Diploma, a continuation of the foundational diploma completed in 2023. Developed in partnership with MIDMAR, this advanced training program was designed to enhance clinical proficiency in trauma-focused care and equip mental health professionals with the tools to manage more complex psychological conditions in conflict-affected communities.

Targeting graduates of the previous cohort, this second phase expanded beyond basic CBT to introduce advanced therapeutic models including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and principles of Trauma-Informed Care. The program emphasized ethical practice, therapist self-awareness, and culturally responsive intervention methods—key components in delivering effective care within humanitarian settings.

The diploma was delivered across three structured semesters. The first, Theoretical Expansion, covered the foundations of trauma-informed therapeutic environments, ethical boundaries, therapist self-reflection, and introductory models of ACT and CPT. The second semester, Advanced Clinical Practice, focused on the application of these therapies, therapist resilience, emotional regulation, and techniques to prevent burnout in high-stress clinical environments.

In the final semester, Supervised Field Application, trainees were required to work with four real clients across approximately eight sessions each. Participants applied either ACT, CPT, or trauma-informed techniques under rigorous individual and group supervision. The supervision process ensured clinical adherence, promoted safe practice, and supported professional development through structured feedback and mentorship.

This advanced diploma reaffirms UOSSM Turkey’s commitment to long-term mental health system strengthening. By providing advanced, supervised, and contextually grounded clinical training, the program continues to shape a new generation of capable, trauma-informed mental health professionals ready to serve high-need populations in Northwest Syria.
